Figma's Config 2023 brought together over 10,000 attendees in person and many more virtually, showcasing significant advancements in design and development collaboration. Here are the highlights:
Dev Mode
Dev Mode is a new workspace designed to bridge the gap between design and development. It allows developers to work seamlessly within Figma, connect to tools like Jira and GitHub, and inspect files directly in VS Code. This mode is currently in beta and free through 2023.
Variables
Figma introduced Variables, which enable designers to store reusable values like colours and text, promoting consistency and efficiency. These can be applied to design tokens and themes, with support for aliasing, scoping, and APIs.
Advanced Prototyping
New prototyping features include the ability to reference and modify variables using mathematical expressions and conditional logic. An inline preview feature was also introduced, allowing designers to iterate and playback their designs more rapidly.
Quality of Life Updates
Updates to improve daily workflows include enhanced auto layout capabilities, a refined font picker, and an improved file browser, making it easier to manage shared files and projects.
Key Speakers
Notable speakers included Dylan Field, CEO of Figma, and industry leaders like Brian Chesky of Airbnb and Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn, who shared insights on design and AI integration.
Overall Experience
The event was highly inclusive, featuring ASL interpretation, closed captioning, and various accessibility accommodations. The thoughtful design of the event, from signage to interactive elements, reflected Figma's commitment to community and innovation (One North).
The future of design looks promising with these advancements, and Figma's focus on AI and collaboration tools is set to transform how designers and developers work together. For more details, check out Figma’s recap of the event.
What’s a Rich Text element?
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
Static and dynamic content editing
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
How to customize formatting for each rich text
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
